History of the Cable Factory in Neustadt (KLN)      
It was on February 1st in 1937 when the cable factory in Neustadt near Coburg - once part of Siemens and Schuckert - started with its cable production. The opening was after only 11 months construction time. The short-form KLN comes from the German expression Kabel- und Leitungswerk Neustadt.

In the following decades the factory was permanently extended. One of the most important extensions during the first years was the building of the wire works in order to manufacture copper wires and bunch strands. The wire works was starting to produce in 1943.
During the II World War the factory remained nearly undestroyed. So the production could be re-started shortly after the end of the war.

The importance of polymer rubber compounds for the cable industry was recognized here at a very early point in time.  It was in 1953 already when the first facilities for production of polymer rubber compounds went in operation. In 1961 an own rubber compound department was installed. The punched card controlled rubber mixture facility was state of the art at this time. Following the increasing importance of polymer rubber for the flexible cable industry the first Continuous Vulcanization facility (CV-line) was erected. Further CV-lines followed during the next years.
At this time utility and flexible cables as well as communication cables had been manufactured in Neustadt. 
According to the increasing market requirements the product range was under permanent supplementation. The innovative power of the factory was always decisive for that, innovation was and is the assumption for new product development as well as the opening of new markets. The innovation process was forced further by the readiness also to invest in new technologies.
Milestones were the erection of the first facility for cross-linking by irradiation in 1983 and the installation of the salt bath line in 1990.

In 1998 Pirelli took over all power cable activities of the Siemens AG and has re-sold it to the American company Goldman Sachs in 2005. The same year in autumn the company was renamed into PRYSMIAN Kabel und Systeme GmbH.
Today the cable factory has 125 production lines for the manufacture of flexible and high flexible power cables. The machine park includes 13 CV-lines: 11 with steam vulcanizing, one salt bath line and one line for cross-linking by irradiation. Furthermore the factory has its own compound department with two full-automatically kneader for production of approximately 100 compounds based on self-developed compound formulas.
The factory is concentrated on the manufacture of cables with copper conductors. The speciality is the production of high flexible cables with conductors coming out of the own wiring department.

For approval of the required cable performance extensive test laboratories are available in the factory. In order to fulfill the continually increasing customer requirements in the future as well a 130m long power cable chain for test purposes was installed in 2005.

The product range of PRYSMIAN's cable factory contains of approx. 4,000 various products.
Having both the application engineering as well as the R&D department located in the factory is an assumption in order to follow the market requirements with competence and immediate action. The manufacture of more and more specialized and customized high flexible cables for fastidious users all over the world is the key focus of PRYSMIAN in Neustadt. This was taken into account when a new CV-line was installed in the factory in 2002.

Today more than ever the PRYSMIAN cable works in Neustadt stands for high valuable special cables used in innumerable applications and the products are accepted all over the world due to their best performance, reliability and long lifetime.
